Support Your Local Wrestler Spotlight

Chase Owens is doing incredible things. He’s been making a splash as part of the Bullet Club in New Japan Pro Wrestling, which is also a hot ticket for wrestling fans right now. “Wrestling in the states is now seen more as entertainment. I love wrestling in Japan because wrestling is a competition and the fans are going crazy the entire match,” Owens says of why he enjoys wrestling in Japan. “They really respect what we go through and what it takes to be successful.”

“Watching with my parents at a very young age and seeing guys like Hulk and Macho. I sat there and said ‘that’s what I want to be when I grow up.”

Why Wrestling?

Chase says of his influences, “watching with my parents at a very young age and seeing guys like Hulk and Macho. I sat there and said ‘that’s what I want to be when I grow up.’” He continued to be a fan of Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage, but when he broke into the business, he “started watching AJ Styles,” and even goes as far to say, “when I started that’s exactly who I wanted to be like.”

Influences can inspire you and direct you, but what about that personal fire? The drive to get up and train every day to get better? “My drive comes from just being competitive. Throughout my life, I’ve always wanted to be the best at whatever I’ve done.” When someone else is successful, he uses their success to push him harder: “I don’t get mad or jealous at people who are having more success than me. In fact, I love it because it gives me something to work toward.”

“For me, I think the expansion of New Japan. They had two shows in Los Angeles this year and they sold out within hours of tickets going on sale.”

Wrestlers Are Fans, Too

When asked what makes him excited in wrestling right now, his answer is no shock: “For me, I think the expansion of New Japan. They had two shows in Los Angeles this year and they sold out within hours of tickets going on sale.” It surprises him, in a way. About five years ago, Chase didn’t know anything about New Japan. “Growing up, I didn’t know about anything other than WCW and WWE. I started watching New Japan with Tony Givens at his house and was thinking how cool it would be to wrestle there.” New Japan surprised Owens again, signing him in 2014. “Little did I know that just a couple of years later, I would be there and I would be competing with the absolute best wrestlers in the world.”

Speaking of New Japan, it’s hard not to mention the hottest stable in professional wrestling right now: Bullet Club. Owens says of his time with Bullet Club, “ at first, I tried to fit in with the group, but after some time, I started just being myself and things just felt more natural and organic.” He does admit that the job comes with its stress: “It’s definitely a lot of pressure, I mean Bullet Club is the hottest thing going in professional wrestling and it’s led me to have the most success I’ve ever had.” How does he deal with the pressures? “I just take every day as another day and am just being myself.”
